This introductory 9 week course looks at mysticism and the lives and works of four great Christian Mystics:

  • Julian of Norwich
  • St. John of the Cross
  • St. Teresa of Avila
  • Meister Eckhart

Syllabus

Week 1 What is Mysticism?
A brief overview of the four mystics: Julian of Norwich, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, Meister Eckhart.
Week 2 The Mystical states.
Part 1 Julian of Norwich.
Week 3 The Way of Mysticism.
Part 2 Julian of Norwich.
Week 4 The two means of approaching God.
Part 1 St. John of the Cross
Week 5 St. John of the Cross - his teaching on Prayer.
Part 2 St. John of the Cross.
Week 6 The place of visions etc. on the spiritual journey.
Part 1 St. Teresa of Avila.
Week 7 Relating the world of the mystics to our own lives.
Part 2 St. Teresa of Avila.
Week 8 'The Man from whom God hid nothing'
Part 1 Meister Eckhart.
The essential need for detachment.
Part 2 Meister Eckhart.
Week 9 Summary of term.
Open questions and answers.
