THE DEATH OF SOCRATES
The dramatic death of Socrates and his proofs of the immortality of
the soul
and the purpose of human life
Jacques-Louis David, 1787, 'The Death of Socrates'
In the 12 hours before his execution Socrates explains to a small group of friends why he is so calm in the face of his impending death. Instructing them to the end, he offers his famous proofs of the immortality of the soul and describes the true purpose of human life. These proofs are as challenging and indeed as reassuring today as when he first uttered them providing a clear focus for a 'life worth living'.
The extraordinary opportunity to come face to face with Socrates at this climactic moment arises from Plato's account in the Phaedo which puts us right there in the cell with 'the wisest, most just and the best of men' to hear his words and follow his direction.
