About the Course
PLATO'S ALCIBIADES 1
Socrates: The lover of the body goes away when the flower of youth fades, but I am the lover who does not go away but remains with you when you are no longer young and all of the others are gone.
Alcibiades was a brilliant, aristocratic, ambitious and ruthless figure of ancient Athens. His life was marked by great achievements but was ultimately mired in scandal, controversy and infamy. In his early years he met the philosopher Socrates and this dialogue captures their meeting in which the young Alcibiades is encouraged to a life of selfknowledge based upon the Delphic maxim 'know thyself'.
In these lectures we will read Plato's Alcibiades I in which Socrates asks:
- What does it mean to know yourself?
- What is this self which we can know?
- Why does a ruler need self-knowledge?
- How does love relate to self-knowledge?
- If we love a person what is it that we actually love?
